Like the earlier poster in the series, this image was fun to make.
It also accurately reflects one of the main narratives of From the Chronicles of Lupa, while at the same time exemplifying one of my favourite literary devices: the insertion of real literary and cultural elements into a fictional narrative in order to achieve better verisimilitude.
In this case I have used the very unusual (and I think quite arresting) song by Johnny Cash "God's Gonna Cut You Down". The lyrics are simply threats set in the second person - which gives them chilling effect - threats of the kind of vengeance that Ruby and the Sisterhood of Lupa dispense at every full moon.
You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
But sooner or later God'll cut you down
Go and tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down
Well my goodness gracious let me tell you the news My head's been wet with the midnight dew I've been down on bended knee talkin' to the man from Galilee He spoke to me in the voice so sweet I thought I heard the shuffle of the angel's feet He called my name and my heart stood still When he said, "John, go do my will!"
Well you can throw your rock, and hide your hand
Working in the dark against your fellow man
But sure as God made black and white
What's done in the dark will be brought to the light.
I thought these posters would be sure to bring me a few readers. I was wrong. That was actually a really useful reality check for me, a sure sign that it was time to get on with some other things in my life at least for the time being... that for the moment at least the culture is not particularly interested in these kinds of stories, although like all things cultural that might turn around in time.
